The project provides communities with curative and preventative care as well as health education via a medical centre and mobile medical teams. The two medical centres in Petite Place Cazeau and La Saline will support the provision of services and be the base for the mobile clinics. The mobile unit comprises of a doctor, six nurses, 2 medical aids, a social worker/ psychologist and health agents. The teams establish temporary posts within the camps and circulate in the larger community where. Three posts are served in La Petite Place Cazeau, the IDP centre Gerald Bataille, 4e Cite, Delmas 54 (while also patients from Delmas 56 and 58 will be able to consult the mobile unit) on a rotational basis 6 days a week.
Services provided by the teams include:
i. Mobile medical teams providing of primary health care (curative and preventative health care) services:
Providing the team staff: a doctor, six nurses, two medical aids, social worker /psychologist, and other specialist carers as well as the necessary medical supplies and equipment. This includes preventative care medicines such as vitamin A, vaccines, Albendazole etc. to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases, parasites and the onset of infection of previously treated injuries.
Transport and communications need and are also provided.
ii. Establishment of network of health care promoters:
Training of 50 health care promoters in basic health and hygiene education and the provision of necessary educational materials. Providing incentives for workers.
iii. Identification of persons at risk of illness and malnutrition
iv. Trauma counselling for affected populations in target areas:
Inclusion of a social worker or psychologist to the medical team.
